Parashah #34 B’midbar – in the Wilderness

B’midbar means “in the Wilderness.”

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) 1:1-4:20

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) Chapter 1

The First Census of Yasharal  (Numbers 26:1–4)

1On the first day of the second month of the second year after the Yasharalites had come out of the land of Mitsrayim, 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 spoke to Moshe in the Tent of Meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. He said: 2 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Yasharal by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

3 You and Aharon are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Yasharal’s army. 4 And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you.

The Leaders of the Tribes

5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you:

From the tribe of rom Re’uḇěn: Elitsur, son of Sheḏěy’ur;

6 from Shim‛on: Shelumi’ěl, son of Tsurishaddai;

7 from  Yahuḏah: Naḥshon, son of Amminaḏaḇ;

8 from Yissasḵar: Nethan’ěl, son of Tsu‛ar;

9 from  Zeḇulun: Eliyaḇ, son of Ḥělon;

10 from the sons of Yosěph: From Ephrayim:

 Elishama, son of Ammihuḏ. From Menashsheh: Gamli’ěl, son of Peḏahtsur;

11 from Binyamin: Aḇiḏan, son of Giḏ‛oni;

12 from Dan: Aḥi‛ezer, son of Ammishaddai;

13 from Ashěr: Paḡ‛i’ěl, son of Oḵran;

14 from Gaḏ: Elyasaph, son of De‛u’ěl;

15 and from Naphtali: Aḥira, son of Ěnan.”

16 These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Yasharal.

The Number of Every Tribe

17 So Moshe and Aharon took these men who had been designated by name, 18 and on the first day of the second month they assembled the whole congregation and recorded their ancestry by clans and families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years of age or older, 19 just as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had commanded Moshe.

So Moshe numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai:

20 From the sons of Re’uḇěn, the firstborn of Yasharal, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 21 those registered to the tribe of Re’uḇěn numbered 46,500

22 From the sons of Shim‛on, according to the records of their clans and families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 23 those registered to the tribe of Shim‛on numbered 59,300

24 From the sons of Gaḏ, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 25 those registered to the tribe of Gaḏ numbered 45,650

26 From the sons of Yahuḏah, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 27 those registered to the tribe of Yahuḏah numbered 74,600

28 From the sons of Yissasḵar, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 29 those registered to the tribe of Yissasḵar numbered 54,400

30 From the sons of Zeḇulun, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 31 those registered to the tribe of Zeḇulun numbered 57,400

32 From the sons of Yosěph:

From the sons of Ephrayim, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 33 those registered to the tribe of Ephrayim numbered 40,500

34 And from the sons of Menashsheh, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 35 those registered to the tribe of Menashsheh numbered 32,200

36 From the sons of Binyamin, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 37 those registered to the tribe of Binyamin numbered 35,400.

38 From the sons of Dan, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 39 those registered to the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700

40 From the sons of Ashěr, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 41 those registered to the tribe of Ashěr numbered 41,500

42 From the sons of Naphtali, according to the records of their clans and families, counting the names of all those twenty years of age or older who could serve in the army, 43 those registered to the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400

44 These were the men numbered by Moshe and Aharon, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Yasharal, each one representing his family. 45 So all the Yasharalites twenty years of age or older who could serve in Yasharal’s army were counted according to their families. 46 And all those counted totaled 603,550

The Exemption of the Luiyim

47 The Luiyim, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers. 48 For 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had said to Moshe: 49 “Do not number the tribe of Luiy in the census with the other Yasharalites. 50 Instead, you are to appoint the Luiyim over the Dwelling Place of the Witness, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.

51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Luiyim are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Luiyim are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.

52 The Yasharalites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard. 53 But the Luiyim are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Yasharal. So the Luiyim are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.”

54 Thus the Yasharalites did everything just as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had commanded Moshe.

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) Chapter 2

The Order of the Camps

1Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe and Aharon: 2 “The Yasharalites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it, each man under his standard, with the banners of his family.

3 On the east side, toward the sunrise, the divisions of Yahuḏah are to camp under their standard:

The leader of the Yahuḏim is Nahshon son of Amminadab, 4 and his division numbers 74,600.

5 The tribe of Yissasḵar will camp next to it. The leader of the children of Yissasḵar is Nethanel son of Zuar, 6 and his division numbers 54,400.

7 Next will be the tribe of Zeḇulun. The leader of the children of Zeḇulun Zebulunites is Eliab son of Helon, 8 and his division numbers 57,400.

9 The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Yahuḏah is 186,400; they shall set out first.

10 On the south side, the divisions of Re’uḇěn are to camp under their standard:

The leader of the children of Re’uḇěn is  Elitsur, son of Sheḏěy’ur, 11 and his division numbers 46,500.

12 The tribe of Shim‛on will camp next to it. The leader of the children of Shim‛on is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, 13 and his division numbers 59,300.

14 Next will be the tribe of Gaḏ. The leader of the children of Gaḏ is  Elyasaph son of Re‛u’ěl, 15 and his division numbers 45,650.

16 The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Re’uḇěn is 151,450; they shall set out second.

17 In the middle of the camps, the Tent of Meeting is to travel with the camp of the Luiyim. They are to set out in the order they encamped, each in his own place under his standard.

18 On the west side, the divisions of Ephrayim are to camp under their standard:

The leader of the children of Ephrayim is Elishama son of  Ammihuḏ, 19 and his division numbers 40,500.

20 The tribe of Manasseh will be next to it. The leader of the children of Manashsheh is Gamli’ěl, son of Peḏahtsur, 21 and his division numbers 32,200.

22 Next will be the tribe of Binyamin. The leader of the children of Binyamin is Aḇiḏan, son of Giḏ‛oni, 23 and his division numbers 35,400.

24 The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Ephrayim is 108,100; they shall set out third.

25 On the north side, the divisions of Dan are to camp under their standard:

The leader of the children of Dan is Aḥi‛ezer, son of Ammishaddai, 26 and his division numbers 62,700.

27 The tribe of Ashěr will camp next to it. The leader of the children of Ashěr is Paḡ‛i’ěl, son of Oḵran, 28 and his division numbers 41,500.

29 Next will be the tribe of Naphtali. The leader of the children of Naphtali is Aḥira, son of Ěnan, 30 and his division numbers 53,400.

31 The total number of men in the camp of Dan is 157,600; they shall set out last, under their standards.”

32 These are the Yasharalites, numbered according to their families. The total of those counted in the camps, by their divisions, was 603,550. 33 But the Luiyim were not counted among the other Yasharalites, as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had commanded Moshe.

34 So the Yasharalites did everything 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 commanded Moshe; they camped under their standards in this way and set out in the same way, each man with his clan and his family.

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) Chapter 3

The Sons of Aharon  (Leviticus 10:1–7)

1This is the account of Aharon and Moshe at the time 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 spoke with Moshe on Mount Sinai.

2 These are the names of the sons of Aharon: Naḏaḇ, the first-born, and Aḇihu, El‛azar, and Ithamar. 3 These were Aharon’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.

4 Naḏaḇ and Abihu, however, died in the presence of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 when they offered unauthorizedfire before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 in the Wilderness of Sinai. And since they had no sons, only El‛azar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aharon.

The Duties of the Luiyim

5 Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aharon the priest to assist him. 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole congregation before the Tent of Appointment, attending to the service of the Dwelling Place. 8 They shall take care of all the furnishings of the Tent of Appointment and fulfill obligations for the Yasharalites by attending to the service of the Dwelling Place.

9 Assign the Luiyim to Aharon and his sons; they have been given exclusively to himfrom among the Yasharalites. 10 So you shall appoint Aharon and his sons to carry out the duties of the priesthood; but any outsider who approaches the Dwelling Place must be put to death.”

11 Again 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 spoke to Moshe, saying, 12 “Behold, I have taken the Luiyim from among the children of Yasharal in place of every firstborn Yasharalite from the womb. The Luiyim belong to Me, 13 for all the firstborn are Mine. On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Mitsrayim, I set apart to Myself all the firstborn in Yasharal, both man and beast. They are Mine; I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.”

The Numbering of the Luiyim

14 Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15 “Number the Luiyim by their families and clans. You are to count every male a month old or more.”

16 So Moshe numbered them according to the word of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, as he had been commanded.

17 These were the sons of Levi by name: Gěrshon, and Qehath, and Merari. 18 These were the names of the sons of Gěrshon by their clans: Liḇni and Shim‛i. 19 The sons of Qehath by their clans were Amram and Yitshar, Ḥeḇron and Uzzi’ěl. 20 And the sons of Merari by their clans were Maḥli and Mushi. These were the clans of the Luiyim, according to their families.

The Gershonites (Numbers 4:21-28 ;  1 Chronicles 23:7-11)

21 From Gěrshon came the Liḇnites and the Shim’ites; these were the clans of the Gěrshonites. 22 The number of all the males a month old or more was 7,500.

23 The Gěrshonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle, 24 and the leader of the families of the Gěrshonites was Eliasaph son of La’al.

25 The duties of the  Gěrshonites at the Tent of Appointment were the Dwelling Place and tent, its covering, the curtain for the entrance to the Tent of Appointment, 26 the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, and the cords—all the service for these items.

The Qehathites  (Numbers 4:1–20 ;  1 Chronicles 23:12–20)

27 From Qehath came the clans of the Amramites, the Ḥeḇronites, the Ḥeḇronites, and the Uzzi’ělites; these were the clans of theQehathites. 28 The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600. They were responsible for the duties of the set-apart place.

29 The clans of the Qehathites were to camp on the south side of the Dwelling Place, 30 and the leader of the families of the Qehathites was Elitsaphan, son of Uzzi’ěl.

31 Their duties were the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used with them, and the curtain—all the service for these items.

32 The chief of the leaders of the Luiyim was El‛azar son of Aharon the priest; he oversaw those responsible for the duties of the set-apart place.

The Merarites  (Numbers 4:29–33 ;  1 Chronicles 23:21–23)

33 From Merari came the clans of the Maḥlites and Mushites; these were the Merarite clans. 34 The number of all the males a month old or more was 6,200.

35 The leader of the families of the Merarites was  Tsuri’ěl, son of Aḇiḥayil; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.

36 The duties assigned to the sons of Merari were the tabernacle’s frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all its equipment—all the service for these items, 37 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.

Moshe and Aharon

38 Moshe, Aharon, and Aharon’s sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, before the Tent of Meeting. They were to perform the duties of the set-apart place as a service on behalf of the Yasharalites; but any outsider who approached the set-apart place was to be put to death.

39 The total number of Luiyim that Moshe and Aharon counted by their clans at 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄’s command, including all the males a month old or more, was 22,000.

The Redemption of the Firstborn

40 Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe, “Number every firstborn male of the Yasharalites a month old or more, and list their names. 41 You are to take the Luiyim for Me—I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄—in place of all the firstborn of Yasharal, and the livestock of the Luiyim in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Yasharalites.”

42 So Moshe numbered all the firstborn of the Yasharalites, as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had commanded him. 43 The total number of the firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273.

44 Again 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 spoke to Moshe, saying, 45 “Take the Luiyim in place of all the firstborn of Yasharal, and the livestock of the Luiyim in place of their livestock. The Luiyim belong to Me; I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 – YAHUAH. 46 To redeem the 273 firstborn Yasharalites who outnumber the Luiyim, 47 you are to collect five shekels for each one, according to the sheqel of the set-apart place, of twenty gerahs. 48 Give the money to Aharon and his sons as the redemption price for the excess among the Yasharalites.”49 So Moshe collected the redemption money from those in excess of the number redeemed by the Luiyim. 50 He collected the money from the firstborn of the Yasharalites: 1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel. 51 And Moshe gave the redemption money to Aharon and his sons in obedience to the word of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, just as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had commanded him.

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) Chapter 4

The Duties of the Kohathites  (Numbers 3:27–32 ;  1 Chronicles 23:12–20)

1Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe and Aharon, 2 “Take a census of the sons of Qehath among the Luiyim by their clans and families, 3 men from thirty to fifty years old—everyone who is qualified to serve in the work at the Tent of Appointment.

4 This service of the Qehathites at the Tent of Appointment regards the most seat-apart things. 5 Whenever the camp sets out, Aharon and his sons are to go in, take down the veil of the curtain, and cover the ark of the Witness with it. 6 They are to place over this a covering of fine leather, spread a solid blue cloth over it, and insert its poles.

7 Over the table of the showbread, they are to spread a blue cloth and place the plates and cups on it, along with the bowls and pitchers for the drink offering. The regular bread offering is to remain on it. 8 And they shall spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover them with fine leather, and insert the poles.

9 They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand used for light, together with its lamps, wick trimmers, and trays, as well as the jars of oil with which to supply it. 10 Then they shall wrap it and all its utensils inside a covering of fine leather and put it on the carrying frame.

11 Over the gold altar, they are to spread a blue cloth, cover it with fine leather, and insert the poles. 12 They are to take all the utensils for serving in the sanctuary, place them in a blue cloth, cover them with fine leather, and put them on the carrying frame.

13 Then they shall remove the ashes from the bronze altar, spread a purple cloth over it, 14 and place on it all the vessels used to serve there: the firepans, meat forks, shovels, and sprinkling bowls—all the equipment of the altar. They are to spread over it a covering of fine leather and insert the poles.

15 When Aharon and his sons have finished covering the set-apart objects and all their equipment, as soon as the camp is ready to move, the Qehathites shall come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the set-apart objects, or they will die. These are the transportation duties of the Qehathites regarding the Tent of Appointment.

16 Eleazar son of Aharon the priest shall oversee the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil. He has oversight of the entire Dwelling Place and everything in it, including the set-apart objects and their utensils.” 17 Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe and Aharon, 18 “Do not allow the Qehathite tribal clans to be cut off from among the Luiyim. 19 In order that they may live and not die when they come near the most set-apart things, do this for them: Aharon and his sons are to go in and assign each man his task and what he is to carry. 20 But the Qehathites are not to go in and look at the set-apart objects, even for a moment, or they will die.”

Hoshĕa (Hosea) 2:1-22

Hoshĕa (Hosea) Chapter 2

Yasharal’s Adultery Rebuked

1 “Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’

and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’

2 Rebuke your mother,

rebuke her,

for she is not My wife,

and I am not her husband.

Let her remove the adultery from her face

and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.

3 Otherwise, I will strip her naked

and expose her like the day of her birth.

I will make her like a desert

and turn her into a parched land,

and I will let her die of thirst.

4 I will have no compassion on her children,

because they are the children of adultery.

5 For their mother has played the harlot

and has conceived them in disgrace.

For she thought,

‘I will go after my lovers,

who give me bread and water,

wool and linen, oil and drink.’

6 Therefore, behold,

I will hedge up her path with thorns;

I will enclose her with a wall,

so she cannot find her way.

7 She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;

she will seek them but not find them.

Then she will say,

‘I will return to my first husband,

for then I was better off than now.’

8 For she does not acknowledge

that it was I who gave her grain,

new wine, and oil,

who lavished on her silver and gold—

which they crafted for Ba’al.

9 Therefore I will take back My grain in its time

and My new wine in its season;

I will take away My wool and linen,

which were given to cover her nakedness.

10 And then I will expose her lewdness

in the sight of her lovers,

  and no one will deliver her

out of My hands.

11 I will put an end to all her exultation:

her feasts, New Moons, and Sabbaths

all her appointed feasts.

12 I will destroy her vines and fig trees,

which she thinks are the wages paid by her lovers.

  So I will make them into a thicket,

and the beasts of the field will devour them.

13 I will punish her for the days of the Ba’als

when she burned incense to them,

  when she adorned herself with rings and jewelry,

and went after her lovers.

  But Me she forgot,”

declares 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.

Alahym’s Mercy to Yasharal

14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her

and lead her to the wilderness,

and speak to her tenderly.

15 There I will give back her vineyards

and make the Valley of Achor

into a gateway of hope.

  There she will respond as she did

in the days of her youth,

as in the day she came up out of Mitsrayim.

16 In that day,”

declares 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄,

  “you will call Me ‘my Husband,’

and no longer call Me ‘my Ba’al.’

17 For I will remove from her lips the names of the Ba’als;

no longer will their names be invoked.

18 On that day I will make a covenant for them

with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air

and the creatures that crawl on the ground.

  And I will abolish bow and sword

and battle in the land,

and will make them lie down in safety.

19 So I will betroth you to Me forever;

I will betroth you in righteousness and justice,

in loving devotion and compassion.

20 And I will betroth you in faithfulness,

and you will know 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.”

21 “On that day I will respond—”

declares 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄—

  “I will respond to the heavens,

and they will respond to the earth.

22 And the earth will respond to the grain,

to the new wine and oil,

and they will respond to Yizre‛al.

23 And I will sow her as My own in the land,

and I will have compassion on ‘No Compassion.’

  I will say to those called ‘Not My People,’

‘You are My people,’

  and they will say,

‘You are my Alahym.’ ”

Romiyim (Romans) 9:22-33

Romiyim (Romans) Chapter 9

Alahym’s Sovereign Choice  (Genesis 25:19–28 ;  Malachi 1:1–5)
22 What if Alahym, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction? 23 What if He did this to make the riches of His esteem known to the vessels of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for esteem— 24 including us, whom He has called not only from the Yahudim, but also from the nations? 25 As He says in Hoshěa:

“I will call them ‘My People’ who are not My people,

and I will call her ‘My Beloved’ who is not My beloved,”

26 and,

  “It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them,

‘You are not My people,’

   they will be called

‘sons of the living Alahym.’ ”

27 YashaYahu cries out concerning Yasharal:

   “Though the number of the Yasharalites is like the sand of the sea,

only the remnant will be saved.

28 For 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 will carry out His sentence on the earth

thoroughly and decisively.”

29 It is just as YashaYahu foretold:

   “Unless 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 of Hosts had left us descendants,

we would have become like Sedom,

we would have resembled Amorrah.”

Yasharal’s Unbelief

30 What then will we say? That the nations, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but Yasharal, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32 Why not? Because their pursuit was not by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 as it is written:

“See, I lay in Tsiyon a stone of stumbling

and a rock of offense;

and the one who believes in Him

will never be put to shame.”

More Torah Portions

NOTE: The Torah that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 gave to Moshe is divided into 54 portions, which is a practical way of reading the entire Torah each year. The new reading cycle traditionally starts after the seventh month moedim: Yom Teruah to Yom Shemini Atzeret. The 54th reading, Ve-Zot Ha-Berakhah, falls during Sukkot.

 ”So Moshe wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Luiy, who carried the ark of the covenant of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, and to all the elders of Yasharal. Then Moshe commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of remission of debt, during Chag Sukkot [the Feast of Tabernacles], when all Yasharal comes before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Yasharal. Assemble the people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may listen and learn to fear 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym and to follow carefully all the words of this law.  Then their children who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Yarden to possess.” Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 31: 9 – 12

It is not required that the Torah be read in this order. However, we find the Father 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 reveals new truths and builds our understanding of His Word each and every time we open and read His Word. We experience renewal and special blessings with each reading. We, therefore, believe it is important to make these readings available to the followers of the Way through this platform.
