Parashah #32 B’har – on the Mount

B’har means “on the Mount.”

Uayyiqra (Leviticus) 25:1-26:2

Uayyiqra (Leviticus) Chapter 25

The Seventh Year  (Exodus 23:10–13 ;  Deuteronomy 15:1–6)

1Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 said to Moshe on Mount Sinai, 2 “Speak to the Yasharalites and say to them: When you enter the land that I am giving you, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.

3 For six years you may sow your field and prune your vineyard and gather its crops. 4 But in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land—a Sabbath to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.

You are not to sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 You are not to reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather the grapes of your untended vines. The land must have a year of complete rest. 6 Whatever the land yields during the Sabbath year shall be food for you—for yourself, your manservant and maidservant, the hired hand or foreigner who stays with you, 7 and for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. All its growth may serve as food.

The Year of Yoḇel

8 And you shall count off seven Sabbaths of years—seven times seven years—so that the seven Sabbaths of years amount to forty-nine years. 9 Then you are to sound the horn far and wide on the tenth day of the seventh month, the Day of Atonement. You shall sound it throughout your land.

10 So you are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be your Yoḇel, when each of you is to return to his property and to his clan.

11 The fiftieth year will be a Yoḇel for you; you are not to sow the land or reap its aftergrowth or harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a Yoḇel; it shall be set apart to you. You may eat only the crops taken directly from the field.

Return of Property

13 In this Year of Yoḇel, each of you shall return to his own property.

14 If you make a sale to your neighbor or a purchase from him, you must not take advantage of each other. 15 You are to buy from your neighbor according to the number of years since the last Yoḇel; he is to sell to you according to the number of harvest years remaining. 16 You shall increase the price in proportion to a greater number of years, or decrease it in proportion to a lesser number of years; for he is selling you a given number of harvests.

17 Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your Alahym; for I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym.

The Blessing of Obedience  (Deuteronomy 28:1–14)

18 You are to keep My statutes and carefully observe My judgments, so that you may dwell securely in the land. 19 Then the land will yield its fruit, so that you can eat your fill and dwell in safety in the land.

20 Now you may wonder, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not sow or gather our produce?’ 21 But I will send My blessing upon you in the sixth year, so that the land will yield a crop sufficient for three years. 22 While you are sowing in the eighth year, you will be eating from the previous harvest, until the ninth year’s harvest comes in.

The Law of Redemption

23 The land must not be sold permanently, because it is Mine, and you are but foreigners and residents with Me. 24 Thus for every piece of property you possess, you must provide for the redemption of the land.

25 If your brother becomes impoverished and sells some of his property, his nearest of kin may come and redeem what his brother has sold. 26 Or if a man has no one to redeem it for him, but he prospers and acquires enough to redeem his land, 27 he shall calculate the years since its sale, repay the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and return to his property. 28 But if he cannot obtain enough to repay him, what he sold will remain in possession of the buyer until the Year of Yoḇel. In the Yoḇel, however, it is to be released, so that he may return to his property.

29 If a man sells a house in a walled city, he retains his right of redemption until a full year after its sale; during that year it may be redeemed. 30 If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled city is permanently transferred to its buyer and his descendants. It is not to be released in the Yoḇel. 31 But houses in villages with no walls around them are to be considered as open fields. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the Yoḇel.

32 As for the cities of the Luiyiim, the Luiyim always have the right to redeem their houses in the cities they possess. 33 So whatever belongs to the Luiyim may be redeemed—a house sold in a city they possess—and must be released in the Yoḇel, because the houses in the cities of the Luiyiim are their possession among the Yasharalites. 34 But the open pastureland around their cities may not be sold, for this is their permanent possession.

Redemption of the Poor

35 Now if your countryman becomes destitute and cannot support himself among you, then you are to help him as you would a foreigner or stranger, so that he can continue to live among you. 36 Do not take any interest or profit from him, but fear your Alahym, that your countryman may live among you. 37 You must not lend him your silver at interest or sell him your food for profit. 38 I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim to give you the land of Kena‛an and to be your Alahym.

Redemption of Bondmen

39 If a countryman among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, then you must not force him into slave labor. 40 Let him stay with you as a hired worker or temporary resident; he is to work for you until the Year of Yoḇel. 41 Then he and his children are to be released, and he may return to his clan and to the property of his fathers.

42 Because the Yasharalites are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim, they are not to be sold as slaves. 43 You are not to rule over them harshly, but you shall fear your Alahym.

44 Your menservants and maidservants shall come from the nations around you, from whom you may purchase them. 45 You may also purchase them from the foreigners residing among you or their clans living among you who are born in your land. These may become your property. 46 You may leave them to your sons after you to inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But as for your brothers, the Yasharalites, no man may rule harshly over his brother.

Redemption of Servants

47 If a foreigner residing among you prospers, but your countryman dwelling near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner or to a member of his clan, 48 he retains the right of redemption after he has sold himself. One of his brothers may redeem him: 49 either his uncle or cousin or any close relative from his clan may redeem him. Or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.

50 He and his purchaser will then count the time from the year he sold himself up to the Year of Yoḇel. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years, based on the daily wages of a hired hand. 51 If many years remain, he must pay for his redemption in proportion to his purchase price. 52 If only a few years remain until the Year of Yoḇel, he is to calculate and pay his redemption according to his remaining years. 53 He shall be treated like a man hired from year to year, but a foreign owner must not rule over him harshly in your sight. 54 Even if he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children shall be released in the Year of Yoḇel. 55 For the Yasharalites are My servants. They are My servants, whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim. I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym.

Uayyiqra (Leviticus) Chapter 26

Additional Blessings of Obedience

1“You must not make idols for yourselves or set up a carved image or sacred pillar; you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it. For I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym.

Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 32:6-27

Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) Chapter 32

Yirmeyahu Buys Hanamel’s Field

6 Yirmeyahu replied, “The word of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 came to me, saying: 7 Behold! Ḥaname’al, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy for yourself my field in Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.’ 8 Then, as 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 had said, my cousin Ḥaname’al came to me in the courtyard of the guard and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Binyamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’ ”

Then I knew that this was the word of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄.

9 So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Ḥaname’al, and I weighed out seventeen shekels of silver.  10 I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruḵ son of Něriyah, son of Maḥsěyah, in the sight of my cousin Ḥaname’al and the witnesses who were signing the purchase agreement and all the Yahudim sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

13 In their sight I instructed Baruḵ, 14 “This is what 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 of Hosts, the Alahym of Yasharal, says: Take these deeds—both the sealed copy and the open copy of the deed of purchase—and put them in a clay jar to preserve them for a long time. 15 For this is what 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 of Hosts, the Alahym of Yasharal, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.”

Yirmeyahu Prays for Understanding

16 After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruḵ son of Něriyah, I prayed to 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 – YAHUAH: 17 “Oh, Master 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!

18 You show loving commitment to thousands but lay the iniquity of the fathers into the laps  of their children after them, O great and mighty Alahym whose name is 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 of Hosts, 19 the One great in counsel and mighty in deed, whose eyes are on all the ways of the sons of men, to reward each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

20 You performed signs and wonders in the land of Mitsrayim, and You do so to this very day, both in Yasharal and among all mankind. And You have made a name for Yourself, as is the case to this day.

21 You brought Your people Yasharal out of the land of Mitsrayim with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror. 22 You gave them this land that You had sworn to give their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.

23 They came in and possessed it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They failed to perform all that You commanded them to do, and so You have brought upon them all this disaster. 24 See how the siege ramps are mounted against the city to capture it. And by sword and famine and plague, the city has been given into the hands of the Kasdim who are fighting against it. What You have spoken has happened, as You now see!

25 Yet You, O Master 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, have said to me, ‘Buy for yourself the field with silver and call in witnesses, even though the city has been delivered into the hands of the Kasdim!’ ”

𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 Answers Yirmeyahu26 Then the word of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 came to Yirmeyahu: 27 “Behold, I am 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, the Alahym of all flesh. Is anything too difficult for Me?

Luqas (Luke) 4:16-21

Luqas (Luke) Chapter 4

The Rejection at Nazareth  (Isaiah 61:1–11;  Matthew 13:53–58; Mark 6:1–6)

16 Then 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤔𐤅𐤏 came to Natsareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, 17 the scroll of the prophet YashaYahu was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written:

18“The Spirit of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 is on Me,

because He has anointed Me

to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovery of sight to the blind,

to release the oppressed,

19to proclaim the year of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄’s favor.

20 Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him, 21and He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

More Torah Portions

NOTE: The Torah that 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 gave to Moshe is divided into 54 portions, which is a practical way of reading the entire Torah each year. The new reading cycle traditionally starts after the seventh month moedim: Yom Teruah to Yom Shemini Atzeret. The 54th reading, Ve-Zot Ha-Berakhah, falls during Sukkot.

”So Moshe wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Luiy, who carried the ark of the covenant of 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄, and to all the elders of Yasharal. Then Moshe commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of remission of debt, during Chag Sukkot [the Feast of Tabernacles], when all Yasharal comes before 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Yasharal. Assemble the people—men, women, children, and the foreigners within your gates—so that they may listen and learn to fear 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym and to follow carefully all the words of this law.  Then their children who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 your Alahym, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Yarden to possess.” Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 31: 9 – 12

It is not required that the Torah be read in this order. However, we find the Father 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 reveals new truths and builds our understanding of His Word each and every time we open and read His Word. We experience renewal and special blessings with each reading. We, therefore, believe it is important to make these readings available to the followers of the Way through this platform.
